Press release about floods in Serbia
The state of the emergency has been announced in 5 cities and 17 municipalities and evacuation is ordered in 12 cities along the Sava River. Around 5,000 people from Obrenovac, town in the proximity of Belgrade with 71,000 inhabitants, had been entirely evacuated.

Soldiers, police and volunteers work around the clock to protect the coal-fired Nikola Tesla power plant, in Obrenovac, which supplies electricity for half of Serbia and most of Belgrade. Emergency crews have so far defended the plant by building high walls of sandbags, but some of the barriers were destroyed when a powerful 9-foot-high surge of floodwater burst through.

In total around 25,000 people are displaced so far, while, at one point, 300,000 homes were without electricity. Considerable damage was made to houses, roads and infrastructure across the country. There is a constant need for equipment, rescue teams, aid to those that have not been evacuated yet and displaced population.

Serbian tennis player, Novak Đoković, who won the Rome Masters tournament, donated the prize to the flood victims in Serbia. According to the reports, his donation is worth USD 500,000 on top of already collected USD 100,000 (via his foundation) and his personal donation. After the Rome tournament he called international media to provide more coverage to the situation in Serbia trying to raise awareness about ongoing catastrophe that will take several years to recovery.

Đoković is a „Global Brand Ambassador” of Uniqlo, a company belonging to Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. Following the recent crisis in Serbia and Đoković’s desire to help people in Serbia, Uniqlo decided to donate USD 50,000 and provide an additional donation in clothes (http://www.fastretailing.com/eng/csr/news/1405211530.html).

Currently, there is a high risk of second flood wave that could endanger other cities although precautionary measures were taken at the most of critical points.

The Government of Serbia has declared May 21 through May 23 the days of National mourning to honor the victims of recent catastrophe.

For its part, Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Japan opened a bank account for donations. Also, donations can be sent by registered mail or brought directly to the Embassy:
